Technique
Which surgical technique is planned?
Laser before gender-affirming surgery · Berlin
When your surgical team recommends permanent hair reduction, we plan laser treatment around their written requirements.

Before the first appointment
Begin laser treatment only when the surgical technique, exact area, accepted method, target endpoint and timing are available in writing.
Which surgical technique is planned?
Which skin will be internal or form the urethra?
Is laser approved for the marked area?
Which intervals and checks does the clinic require?
Hair removal before vaginoplasty
Some vaginoplasty techniques use hair-bearing genital skin to line the vaginal canal. Permanent hair removal may then be required to reduce the risk of internal hair growth and related problems.
Requirements vary by clinic, surgical technique and anatomy. A vulvoplasty without a canal or a technique using other tissue may have different requirements. The written plan from the surgical team is decisive.
Hair removal before phalloplasty
Pre-operative hair removal may be required at a phalloplasty donor site, especially on the part of the skin used to create the urethra. Hair left inside a constructed urethra can contribute to complications.
The entire forearm or thigh does not automatically need treatment. The surgical team selects the side and exact section. Do not begin broad treatment without a marked or written area.
Laser and complementary options
Our three-wavelength diode laser is designed for Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI. It targets pigment in the hair and produces permanent hair reduction. We select suitable settings for you individually.
Electrolysis can be useful for white, grey or very light hair. We do not provide it ourselves, but we are happy to refer you to a trusted partner studio.
We offer waxing for body areas where you want temporarily smooth skin. If your surgery requires permanent hair removal, it does not replace laser or electrolysis. Please confirm the surgical area with your operating team first.
Your timeline
Laser works step by step because hairs are active in different growth phases. Starting early helps treatment fit naturally into your surgical preparation. The time you need depends on the area, hair density, skin response and your surgical team’s requirements.
We guide you through realistic milestones and discuss progress transparently. No responsible provider can promise a fixed session count or completion date; surgical clearance comes from your operating team.
Costs & possible insurance coverage
Any possible coverage in Germany must be checked individually before treatment. Rules from foreign health systems or individual clinics do not automatically apply in Germany.
Ask the surgical team to confirm the method, area and documentation, then ask your insurer which applications, estimates, documents and providers it accepts. LILY AFFIRM does not promise reimbursement.
Pre-operative hair-removal FAQ
No. Not every trans person wants surgery, and not every gender-affirming procedure requires hair removal. The need and area depend on the technique, tissue used and surgical-team requirements.
Once your surgical team’s requirements are available in writing, an early consultation is useful. Laser works across several growth phases, so an early start can fit treatment more comfortably into your surgical plan.
Not automatically. The key area may be the skin that will form the urethra. The surgical team must select and mark the donor site and exact section.
White, grey and very light hair usually responds poorly to laser. Electrolysis can treat those hairs individually. We do not provide it ourselves, but we are happy to refer you to a trusted partner studio. First confirm which method your surgical team requires.

Only the surgical team can provide surgical clearance. A hair-removal studio cannot guarantee clearance or completion in time for surgery.
